            FORTY MILLION PERSONS WITHOUT HEALTH INSURANCE
                COVERAGE IN 1994, CENSUS BUREAU REPORTS

     The Commerce Department's Census Bureau has published a report
showing that 15 percent (39.7 million) of the nation's population did not
have health insurance coverage during the entire 1994 calendar year.  The
report contains data previously released by the bureau on October 5 at the
annual income and poverty press conference.

     The report, "Health Insurance Coverage:  1994" (P60-190), provides
information on the health insurance coverage status of persons by selected
demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, as well as by state in
1994.
