FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MONDAY, MARCH 24, 1997 Public Information Office CB97-06 301-457-3030/301-457-3670 (fax) 301-457-4067 (TDD) e-mail: pio@census.gov Income and Poverty Statistics 301-763-8576 Census Bureau Releases New Estimates Of Poverty And Median Household Income For States And Counties For 1993 The Commerce Department's Census Bureau has developed estimates of poverty and median household income for states and counties in response to the need for more current statistics on household income and the population living below the poverty level for these areas. The estimates released today mark the first effort by the Census Bureau to produce county-level poverty and income estimates more frequently than those released every 10 years based on the decennial census. The tabulations for 1993 show estimates of the total number of poor persons, the number of poor related children age 5 to 17 years, and the median household income for all states and all 3,143 counties. The county-level income and poverty estimates were obtained by combining results from the Census Bureau's 1994 March Current Population Survey with data from federal income tax returns, food stamp participation (administrative record data), and 1990 decennial census figures. The tables can be found on the Census Bureau's Internet site under the Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates program: http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/saipe.html. They are also available from the Census Bureau's Public Information Office. A second release covering 1993 estimates of the number of poor children under age 5, the number of poor persons age 65 and over, and per capita income is planned for later this year. This work was supported by the Census Bureau, and the Departments of Housing and Urban Development, Agriculture, Labor, Education, and Health and Human Services.-X-The Census Bureau--pre-eminent collector and provider of timely, relevant, and quality data about the people and economy of the United States.
