EDT, JULY 7, 1997 (MONDAY) Public Information Office CB97-112 301-457-3030/301-457-3670 (fax) 301-457-4067 (TDD) e-mail: pio@census.gov Greg Harper 301-457-2385 Nevada Leads All States In Housing Unit Growth From 1990-1996, According To State-by-State Census Bureau Report Between 1990 and 1996, Nevada had a 31.9 percent growth in the number of housing units, according to new state housing unit estimates released today by the Commerce Department's Census Bureau. Idaho had the second highest growth (15.5 percent), followed by Georgia (14.1 percent), Utah (14.0 percent) and Arizona (13.9 percent). For 1996 alone, California had the most housing units with 11,811,000, followed by Texas with 7,468,000. Wyoming had the fewest with 209,000. In another finding of these new estimates, Utah had the highest average of persons per household (3.06), while the District of Columbia had the lowest (2.24). These new state estimates cover number of housing units, households, households by age of householder and people per household for 1990-1996.
