Manufactured products comprised 78 percent of all goods exported in 1996 and are growing on pace to exceed $500 billion in 1997, said a Census Brief titled Manufactured Exports Approach $500 Billion a Year (CENBR/97-3). Airplanes, computers, vehicles and related parts are "big ticket" manufactured exports, but industries showing notable growth include textiles and apparel, electronic circuits and telecommunications equipment. In 1996, one-quarter of all manufactured exports came from just two states California ($78 billion) and Texas ($59 billion). Every state had export shipments of at least $125 million. The brief focuses on export information compiled monthly by the Census Bureau from 2 million Customs records.
