           SHIPMENTS OF COMPUTERS SHOW STRONG GAIN IN 1995,
                         CENSUS BUREAU REPORTS

     The value of shipments of computers in 1995 was $52.1 billion, an increase 
of 28 percent or $11.3 billion over shipments in 1994.  This information is 
contained in a report entitled, "Value of Product Shipments," M95(AS)-2, and 
new tables released today on the Internet, by the Commerce Department's Census 
Bureau.  The tabulations provide estimates of the value of product shipments 
for approximately 1,750 classes of manufactured products.

     Other highlights of changes in value of product shipments between 1994 and 
1995 include:

     -    Shipments of motor vehicles and car bodies increased to
          $198 billion, an increase of more than $3 billion over
          shipments in 1994;

     -    Shipments of bottled and canned soft drinks grew by
          over $2 billion to $28.7 billion; 
                                
     -    Shipments of cigarettes, including nontobacco
          cigarettes, increased almost $3 billion to $27 billion,
          and 

     -    Shipments of products from petroleum refining increased
          from $123.8 billion in 1994 to $130.5 billion in 1995.

     Values in this report are in current dollars for the years shown and are 
not adjusted for inflation.

      Data provided on the Internet tables and report are from a sample of 
58,000 manufacturing establishments and are subject to sampling  as well as 
nonsampling variability.  Sources of nonsampling variability include errors of 
response, nonreporting, and coverage.  Measures of sampling variability, 
presented as relative standard errors, are shown in the publication tables.
