California Had The Most Manufacturing Jobs In 1995,
Census Bureau Says In New State-By-State Report

In 1995, California had more persons employed in manufacturing jobs (1.9
million) than any other state, according to a new 50-state Internet tabulation
being released today by the Commerce Department's Census Bureau. The report
will be available in a few weeks.

Three states tied for second place: Ohio, Texas, and Illinois each
employed about one million people in this sector of the economy. Hawaii
(17,300), Alaska (15,800), the District of Columbia (13,800), and Wyoming
(9,900) had the fewest number of employees in these types of jobs.

The report, "1995 Annual Survey of Manufactures, Geographic Area
Statistics" (M95(AS)-3), and corresponding Internet tables provide data on the
number of employees, production workers, value added by manufacture, cost of
materials, value of shipments, and new capital expenditures for all
manufacturing establishments for the nation, each state, and the District of
Columbia. The data include manufacturing industry groups such as: food,
apparel, lumber, chemicals, computers, and transportation equipment.

The report and Internet tables are from a sample of 58,000 manufacturing
establishments and are subject to sampling as well as nonsampling variability.
Sources of nonsampling variability include errors of response, nonreporting,
and coverage. Measures of sampling variability, presented as relative standard
errors, are shown in publication tables.

the Recently Released section when it is available.
