Seventy Million Students Were Enrolled In School In 1995
                          Census Bureau Finds

In October 1995, 70 million students were enrolled in nursery school
through college. This is according to tabulations released today by the
Commerce Department's Census Bureau that provide information on the nation's
school enrollment by such characteristics as age, race, sex, marital status and
family income for preprimary school through college.

     Highlights for 1995 include:

   - There were 4.4 million children enrolled in nursery school
and 3.9 million enrolled in kindergarten.

   - Enrollment in elementary school (grades 1-8) was 31.8
     million.

   - High school enrollment totaled 14.9 million.

   - The annual high school dropout rate (from grades 10-12) was
     5.4 percent.

   - The number of people enrolled in college totaled 14.7
million. About 6 million college students, or 41 percent,
were 25 years old and over.

The tabulations, available on the Internet at
http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/school.html, are titled "School
Enrollment--Social and Economic Characteristics of Students: October 1995." A
paper version of the same tables (PPL-55) may be obtained from the Census
Bureau's Public Information Office.

Data are from the October 1995 Current Population Survey. As in all
surveys, the data are subject to sampling variability and other sources of
error.
