     Motor Freight Transportation and Warehousing Revenues
               Up in 1996, Census Bureau Reports
                                
  The nation's trucking and warehousing industries recorded operating
revenues in 1996 of $173 billion and $11 billion, respectively 7 percent
and 5 percent increases over 1995, according to data released today by the
Commerce Department's Census Bureau.

  Changes in the revenues and expenses of the trucking industry between
1995 and 1996 included: 

   -	Motor carrier revenue increased 6 percent to $164 billion.

   -	Long-distance trucking revenue was up 6 percent and accounted for
	68 percent of all for-hire motor carrier revenue.

   -	Local trucking revenue rose 7 percent to $52 billion.

   -	Total industry expenses were up 7 percent to $163 billion.

  Changes in the revenues and expenses of the warehousing industry between
1995 and 1996 included: 
                                
   -	Public warehousing and storage revenue was $11 billion in 1996, an
	increase of 5 percent over 1995.

   -	General warehousing and storage revenue increased 6 percent to $6.5
	billion and represented 57 percent of all public warehousing and
	storage revenue in 1996.

   -	Refrigerated warehousing revenue in 1996 was $2 billion, which
	was 19 percent of all public warehousing and storage revenue.

   -	Total industry operating expenses in 1996 were up 6 percent to
	$9 billion.

  The estimates from the 1996 Transportation Annual Survey are subject to
sampling and nonsampling error. Sources of nonsampling error include
errors of response, nonreporting and coverage. Measures of sampling
variability, presented as relative standard errors, are shown in the
tables.
