             Census Bureau Releases 1998 Population
                   Estimates for Puerto Rico

The population of Puerto Rico on July 1, 1998, was 3,860,091, an increase
of 323,181 people since April 1, 1990, according to estimates released on
the Internet today by the Commerce Department's Census Bureau.

Puerto Rico's average annual growth rate between 1990 and 1998 was 1.1
percent, compared to a 1.0 percent increase for the 50 states and the
District of Columbia during the same period.

The Census Bureau prepared these population estimates for Puerto Rico
using the latest available data on births, deaths and net migration.

In addition to the 1998 data, population estimates and their components
(birth, deaths, and net migration) for 1990 through 1997 also are
available on the Internet.
