Census Bureau Says Puerto Rico Population Nears 4 Million

The population of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico as of July 1, 1997,
was 3,827,038, an increase of 290,128 people since April 1, 1990,
according to estimates released on the Internet today by the Commerce
Department's Census Bureau.

The estimates are available in the Census Bureau's International
Database at http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/idbnew.html.

Puerto Rico's growth rate between 1990 and 1997 was 8.2 percent. This
was not statistically different from the United States' 8.1 percent
increase during the same period.

The Census Bureau based its latest population estimates on births,
deaths and net migration. Those components are detailed in the database.

In addition to the 1997 data, population estimates and their components
for 1990 through 1996 also are on the Internet.
