EDT, APRIL 6, 1998 (MONDAY) Public Information Office CB98-54 301-457-3030/301-457-3670 (fax) 301-457-4067 (TDD) Matt Christenson International Programs Center 301-457-1358 Census Bureau Says Puerto Rico Population Nears 4 Million The population of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico as of July 1, 1997, was 3,827,038, an increase of 290,128 people since April 1, 1990, according to estimates released on the Internet today by the Commerce Department's Census Bureau. The estimates are available in the Census Bureau's International Database at http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/idbnew.html. Puerto Rico's growth rate between 1990 and 1997 was 8.2 percent. This was not statistically different from the United States' 8.1 percent increase during the same period. The Census Bureau based its latest population estimates on births, deaths and net migration. Those components are detailed in the database.
