Sales Taxes One-Third of 1997 State Tax Revenues,
                          Census Bureau Reports

The nation's state governments collected $443.5 billion in tax revenues
in 1997, $147.1 billion of which was generated from general sales taxes,
according to tabulations released today by the Commerce Department's
Census Bureau.

The embargoed tabulations can be accessed at
http://www.census.gov/dcmd/www/embargo/embargo.html. After the
release time, the data may be found at http://www.census.gov/govs/www/statetax.html.

The tabulations, from the 1997 Annual Survey of State Government Tax
Collections, show separate tax information for each state. Major
categories of state taxes include: individual income taxes, selective
sales taxes (such as those on tobacco or liquor products), severance taxes
and license taxes.

Examples of tax receipts from these sources include taxes on individual
income, $145 billion; gasoline sales, $27 billion; motor vehicle
licenses, $13 billion; utilities, $9 billion; and tobacco sales, $7
billion.

The data in this report came from state government records. Quality
assurance methods were applied to all phases of data collection and
processing. However, the data are subject to nonsampling error including
errors of response and miscoding.
