Census Bureau Updates Data on School Enrollment

The Commerce Department's Census Bureau today released 1998 data on the
72 million people -- more than 1 in 4 Americans -- who were enrolled in some
kind of school nursery through college.

The tabulations, School Enrollment -- Social and Economic Characteristics
of Students: October 1998 (Update), update the 1997 school enrollment
report issued in early July.

The new 1998 data characterize students by age, gender, race, Hispanic
origin and nativity. Tabulations also detail topics such as family income
for secondary school students and the employment status of recent high
school graduates. Historical tables examine school enrollment as far back
as 1947.

Data are from the October 1998 Current Population Survey. Statistics
from sample surveys are subject to sampling and nonsampling error.
