Census Bureau Releases 1998 Population Estimates
for Puerto Rico's Municipios
The Commerce Department's Census Bureau today released population
estimates as of July 1, 1998, for Puerto Rico's 78 municipios, including
percentage changes and number of births and deaths from 1990 to 1998 for
each municipio.
The municipios of Cidra (50,245) and Canovanas (51,922) posted the
largest percentage changes between 1990 and 1998, about 41 percent each,
followed by Juncos (42,691) at 40 percent and Toa Alta (60,674) at 38
percent. San Juan, the island's largest municipio (439,427), grew 0.4
percent between 1990 and 1998.
These estimates are consistent with the 1998 estimate for the entire
commonwealth released by the Census Bureau in December 1998. Puerto Rico's
population totaled 3.9 million in 1998, an increase of 9.6 percent since
1990.
Population estimates for all the municipios can be found on the Census
Bureau's Internet site at
