Census Bureau Releases 1996 State Poverty Estimates

The Commerce Department's Census Bureau today released 1996 poverty
estimates for three age groups of children, and for people of all ages, in
each state and the District of Columbia.

The 1996 estimates include the numbers of poor people, poor children
under 18, poor children ages 5 to 17 living with a family and poor
children under age 5. Also being released are estimates of median
household income. The estimates are available on the Internet at
http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/saipe.html.

The Census Bureau produced these model-based estimates by combining
results from its March 1997 Current Population Survey with records on food
stamp recipients, aggregate data from federal individual income tax
returns and 1990 decennial census figures. The poverty estimates are used
in administering federal programs and allocating federal funds to local
jurisdictions.
