Historical Education Reports Available For First Time
                   On Census Bureau's Web Site

The Commerce Department's Census Bureau is making a series of reports
issued during the pre-Internet era available on its public Web site as
part of an ongoing effort to publicize more than 500 such demographic
documents.

The 10 reports released between 1973 and 1993 contain data on
educational attainment that were collected yearly in the March supplement
to the Current Population Survey (CPS).

"This is another demonstration of the Census Bureau's determination to
use new technologies to make its data accessible to a broader audience,"
said Census Bureau Director Kenneth Prewitt. "Adding these reports to the
Census Bureau's Internet holdings will make it easier for users to conduct
historical research. Previously, one would have had a difficult time
trying to access these reports, since few libraries maintain Census Bureau
reports going back that far."

The Internet documents include the full content of the original paper
reports data on educational attainment by age, income, sex, family status,
state of residence and other characteristics. They are available in Adobe's
Portable Document Format at
http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/educ-attn.html.

Note: Over the next several years, the Census Bureau will scan onto its
Web site the remainder of the more than 500 CPS reports on demographic
topics, such as household and family characteristics, marital status and
voting, originally issued between 1947 and the early 1990s. Each time
more historical reports are placed on the site, the biweekly Census Bureau
Tipsheet will announce it.
