          Mountain States Show Biggest Increases in Housing; 
            Nevada Leads the Way, Census Bureau Reports


  Fast-growing Nevada saw a 48 percent increase in housing units between
1990 and 1998, according to state estimates released today by the 
Commerce Department's Census Bureau.

  The Internet tables cover numbers of housing units, households,
households by age of householder and people per household for the period
1990-1998.

  Also included are tables:

  ST-98-48:  Percent Change in Housing Units, Households, and Households 
by Age of Householder: 4/1/90 to 7/1/98

  ST-98-49:  Housing Estimates for 7/1/98 and Housing Unit Change 
for 4/1/90 to 7/1/98

  Between April 1, 1990, and July 1, 1998, the number of housing units in
Nevada increased from 519,000 to 767,000, an increase of 248,000.
Neighboring states also witnessed fast growth -- Utah at 22 percent, Idaho
at 22 percent and Arizona at 21 percent. Georgia at 21 percent was the
only other state to experience housing unit growth of more than 
20 percent.

  Nationally, housing growth was estimated at 10 percent, increasing from
102.3 million in 1990 to 112.5 million in 1998.
