               Census Bureau Releases 1999 Population
                     Estimates for Puerto Rico

The estimated population of Puerto Rico on July 1, 1999, was
3,889,507, an increase of 367,470 people since April 1, 1990, the
Commerce Department's Census Bureau said today.

Puerto Rico's estimated population increased by 10.4 percent between
April 1, 1990, and July 1, 1999, compared with a growth of 9.6 percent
for the 50 states and the District of Columbia during the same period.

The Census Bureau prepared the Puerto Rico estimates using the latest
available data on births, deaths and net migration (immigration minus
emigration).

In addition to the 1999 data, population estimates and their components
(births, deaths and net migration) for every year from 1990 through
1998 are also available on the Internet.
