Shapiro, Census Bureau Director Kenneth Prewitt, Bureau of Economic Analysis Director Steven Landefeld and Census Bureau Associate Director for Economic Programs Frederick T. Knickerbocker will release a report providing first-time data on the modern economy at a news conference Tuesday. The report, the first in a two-year series from the 1997 Economic Census, will give a snapshot of the economy as it enters the new millennium. The report's findings will provide, for the first time, measurements of key sectors of the nation's economy, including information, high-tech and support services, among others. These new measurements are made possible by the initial use of a new business classification mechanism the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).
