Census Bureau Facts for Features

A product of the U.S. Census Bureau's Public Information Office CB99-FF.04 April 1, 1999 Countdown to Census 2000: One Year To Go Census Day (April 1) 2000 is now one year away. To commemorate this milestone, we present some facts on the magnitude of Census 2000 -- - Census questionnaires will be delivered to about 120 million housing units in the nation's 50 states and the District of Columbia plus approximately 1.6 million in Puerto Rico,Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. - All told, we expect to count about 275 million people in the 50 states and the District of Columbia plus another approximately 4 million in Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa,the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. - The Census Bureau plans to hire and train over 600,000 people to conduct Census 2000. - To ensure that the census operates smoothly, the Census Bureau will operate 520 Local Census Offices, 12 Regional Census Centers and one Data Processing Center nationwide; there will be three additional Data Processing Centers which will be operated by contractors. - Around eight million maps will be used for Census 2000 field work. - The Census Bureau expects 79 million questionnaires to be returned within the first two weeks after Census Day. - About $200 billion in federal funds will be distributed annually based on Census 2000 results. - Census 2000 will be the first in which households can respond online.
