Census 2000 Operations Briefing -- Census Bureau director will brief news
media on recruitment of hundreds of thousands of temporary workers for
Census 2000 on Thursday, Jan. 6, at 9:30 a.m. EST. Immediately afterwards,
a joint Census Bureau/General Services Administration briefing on their
partnership to open, furnish and wire local census offices. (Tentatively
scheduled for release in two weeks.)

Communities Challenged to Show Civic Pride by Increasing Census Participation --
A new initiative called "How America Knows, What America Needs" will encourage
participation in Census 2000 at the grassroots level. (Tentatively scheduled
for release in two weeks.)

Census Bureau Begins Recruiting Hundreds of Thousands of Workers for
Census 2000 -- Recruiting and partnership efforts intensify as Census Day,
April 1, 2000 draws near. (Tentatively scheduled for release in one week.)

Census 2000 News Conference Kicks Off Early Enumeration in Alaska -- Census
Bureau director will participate in a news conference to kick off early

Census Bureau Dress Rehearsal Data Now on CD-ROM -- Data from the Hundred
Percent Summary File for the Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal. (Tentatively

Census Bureau Announces Release of 1998 American Community Survey (ACS)
CD-ROM -- Census Bureau announces release of third edition of ACS CD-ROM,
with new information from the 1998 test survey. (Tentatively scheduled for
release in three weeks.)

Non-Census

National Population Projections: 1999-2100 -- Population projections by age,
sex, race, Hispanic origin and nativity for the next 100 years. Included with
the data sets is a working paper on the methods used to develop the projections.
(Tentatively scheduled for release in one week.)

Educational Attainment Data for Metro Areas -- 1995-1998 data for 36 of the
nation's most populous metro areas, showing percentages of adults with at
least a high school diploma and a bachelor's degree or more, cross-tabulated
by various demographic characteristics. (Tentatively scheduled for release
in three weeks.)

American Housing Survey for Selected Metropolitan Areas in 1998 -- Data on
size and composition of the housing inventory, housing costs and housing
and neighborhood quality for Baltimore, Boston, Houston, Minneapolis, Oakland,
Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Tampa-St. Petersburg, San Jose, Washington, D.C.,
Cincinnati, Norfolk, Birmingham, Rochester and Providence metropolitan areas.

Census Bureau Facts for Features: African American History Month -- Statistical
information from the Census Bureau's demographic and economic subject areas
about the African American community whose history is celebrated in February.
Similar Facts for Features commemorate other events and holidays throughout the

Working Papers

Accounting for Uncertainty About Variances in Small Area Estimation -- Explores
potential estimation approaches for the current Small Area Income and Poverty
Estimates model for state poverty rates. (Tentatively scheduled for release in
two weeks.)

Bayesian Hierarchical Modeling of U.S. County Poverty Rates -- Discusses
research on a potential model for estimating county poverty rates. (Tentatively
scheduled for release in three weeks.)

Profiles of Poor Counties: Some Empirical Evidence -- Describes the
relationship of selected demographic and labor force characteristics with
poverty ratios at the county level. (Tentatively scheduled for release in

Radio

The "Profile America" CD for January is now available. This series of 60-second
features, one for each weekday of the month, is now heard on more than
500 stations across the country. Each feature is keyed to an event whose
anniversary or observance is celebrated on the air date. January's features will
cover such topics as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; the first woman doctor in the
country; the creation of the U.S. Civil Service; and the invention of  
camcorders and tin cans.

Beginning in January, we will be adding sound bites on Census 2000 for use
by broadcasters. These will feature Census Bureau Director Kenneth Prewitt,
and will follow the regular daily "Profile America" segments each month.

A companion program, "Al Dia," is produced for Spanish-language stations.

An updated Census 2000 B-Roll is now available through the Public Information
Office. This reel features early Census 2000 activities: Census in Schools,
enumerators at work, form filling, form printing and processing, plus new
Census 2000 graphics.

This reel runs 14:40 minutes and is available at no cost in Betacam SP and
