Census Bureau Releases Profile of the
           Nation's Foreign-Born Population from Asia

The Commerce Department's Census Bureau today released a two-page Census
Brief profiling the nation's Asian-born residents.

The brief, titled From the Mideast to the Pacific: A Profile of the
Nation's Asian Foreign-Born Population, provides analysis and graphics on
the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the Asian born.
Specifically, it examines their numerical growth, settlement patterns and
likelihood of citizenship, and compares them to the native population and
other foreign born. Comparisons cover a variety of topics, including
educational attainment, occupation, poverty, income and household size.

Also released today were two related briefs, which profile the nation's
foreign-born population as a whole and the Latin American-born population
in particular.

The briefs are based on a report issued previously by the Census
Bureau titled Profile of the Foreign-Born Population in the United
States: 1997. The statistics are from the 1997 Current Population
Survey. Statistics from this survey are subject to sampling and
nonsampling error.
