EMBARGOED UNTIL: 12:01 A.M. EDT, AUGUST 31, 2001 (FRIDAY) Publication Information Office CB01-144 301-457-3030/301-457-3670 (fax) 301-457-1037 (TDD) e-mail: pio@census.gov David Waddington/Geoffrey Gee 301-457-3195 Census Bureau Releases 1998 Poverty Estimates for States and District of Columbia The Commerce Departments Census Bureau today released 1998 poverty estimates for three age groups of children and for the total population in each state and the District of Columbia from the Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates program. The model-based estimates will be used in administering federal programs. The 1998 estimates include the total number of poor people, poor children under 18, poor children ages 5 to 17 living with a family and poor children under 5. Also being released are 1998 estimates of median household income. The estimates should not be confused with Census 2000 results. Census 2000 data on income and poverty at the state level will not be released until 2002. The model-based estimates are produced separately from the annual income and poverty reports issued in September of each year. Reports for 2000 are tentatively scheduled to be released Sept. 25. The Census Bureau produced the estimates by combining results from its March 1999 Current Population Survey (which asks about 1998 income) with records on Supplemental Security Income recipients, aggregate data from federal individual income tax returns and 1990 decennial census figures.
