EMBARGOED UNTIL: 12:01 A.M. EST, DECEMBER 20, 2001 (THURSDAY)Public Information Office CB01-189 301-457-3030/301-457-3670 (fax) 301-457-1037 (TDD) e-mail: pio@census.gov David Waddington/Natasha Isaac 301-457-3195 Census Bureau Releases 1998 Poverty Estimates for U.S. Counties The Commerce Department's Census Bureau today released 1998 poverty estimates for each of the 3,141 U.S. counties, including estimates of poor children under 18 and poor children ages 5 to 17 who are related to the head of the household. The new model-based estimates, used in administering federal programs, also include median household income. The estimates should not be confused with Census 2000 results. Census 2000 data on income and poverty at the county level will not be released until next year. Also, the estimates released today are not the same as estimates from the March Current Population Survey (CPS), released every September for the nation and states. The Census Bureau produced the county estimates by combining results from the March 1999 CPS , which asked questions about 1998 income, with records on food stamp recipients, aggregate data from federal individual income tax returns and 1990 decennial census figures. -X-
