                 Detailed Demographic Data From
               Census 2000 Released for Missouri

The U.S. Commerce Department's Census Bureau today released the first detailed
demographic data based on Census 2000 questions asked of all people and about every housing
unit in the state of Missouri.

The electronic file (Summary File 1) includes statistical data on the following population
items: sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, and household and
family characteristics. Housing items include occupancy status and tenure (whether the unit is
owner- or renter-occupied).

Summary File 1 contains 286 tables for states, counties, county subdivisions, places, census
tracts, ZIP code tabulation areas, as well as congressional districts for the 106th Congress and,
where applicable, American Indian and Alaska Native areas and Hawaiian home lands. For most
subjects, data for census block groups and blocks also are shown.

As each state is released, the set of compressed ASCII files will be made available for
download from the Census Bureau's new search-and-retrieval database, American FactFinder
http://factfinder.census.gov and via its FTP server http://www2.census.gov/census_2000/.
At the same time, these files will be available for purchase from the Census Bureau's Customer
Services Center on recordable CD-ROMs that will not have software. In addition, the Census
Bureau plans to subsequently release a value-added CD-ROM product with a proprietary data
format and software. It, too, may be purchased from Customer Services. When all states have
been released, the Census Bureau will put the entire SF1 for all states on one or two DVDs.

A weekly release schedule will be posted on a special page on the Census Bureau's Web site
at http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2001/sumfile1.html. For information about
ordering Census 2000 products, contact Customer Services on 301-763-INFO(4636) or e-mail
webmaster@census.gov.
