         Census Bureau Releases Census  2000 Population
                   Counts for American Samoa
                                

  The U.S. Census Bureau today released the official Census 2000
population count of 57,291 for American Samoa.

  As part of Census 2000, the Census Bureau worked with the American
Samoan government to collect detailed population and housing data. The
count was provided to American Samoa Gov. Tauese P.F. Sunia.

  American Samoa's population increased by 10,518 over the previous census
in 1990. This represented a 22 percent increase in 10 years.

  The Census Bureau will provide more detailed data for American Samoa in
a demographic profile scheduled for release later this year and in a
separate summary file and printed report, scheduled for release in
February 2002 and November 2002, respectively.
                                
  The following table shows the final census counts for small geographic
areas in American Samoa:
