Louis Kincannon will explain to state lawmakers at the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) how census data affect state and local issues, such as emergency preparedness, transportation congestion and school overcrowding. "Census numbers help Congress distribute more than $200 billion in federal funds back to state and local governments every year," said Kincannon. "In a year when most state budgets are under considerable pressure, knowing the size and shape of local communities can greatly improve how policy-makers make funding decisions. Locally, data from the 1990 and 2000 censuses helped Denver transportation officials plan for expansion of Interstate 25."
