Mary has worked for the Department of Finance in the Demographic Research Unit since 1979. Initially she worked in the city population program that produces the annual January 1 estimates used to calculate the appropriation limit and to distribute state subvention funds. In 1983 Mary was first involved in the production of population projections. Since that time Mary has had primary responsibility for 7 population projection series and serves as the State's expert on future population. Mary was appointed Chief of the Demographic Research Unit on May 1, 2001. In this position she serves as the State Demographer and has responsibility for all the State’s official population information. In addition, she oversees the State Census Data Center. Mary received a BA degree from Sonoma State University.
