Revenues of the nation's health care and social assistance firms,
including hospitals, physicians' offices, child and youth services, and
services for the elderly and disabled, totaled $1.15 trillion in 2001 the
Commerce Department's Census Bureau reported today. This was an increase
of 8 percent over 2000.

"Hospital revenues grew to $462 billion in 2001, an increase of more
than $30 billion," said Census Bureau analyst Jennifer Thorne. "This
represents an increase of about 7 percent over the previous year."

Tables from the 2001 Service Annual Survey: Health Care and Social
Assistance Services showed major sources of payments to hospitals as follows:

                           Revenues Change
 Hospitals in 2001 2000 - 2001

Private insurance $170 billion 9.5%
Medicare 48 billion 6.5%
Medicaid 56 billion 7.4%

The Census Bureau data show that revenues of physicians' offices were
$219 billion (employer firms only). Major sources of revenues for
physicians' offices were:

                                    Revenues Change
 Physicians' Offices in 2001 2000 - 2001

Private insurance $106 billion 8.9%
Medicare 53 billion 8.8%
Patient "out-of-pocket" payments 24 billion 3.3%
Medicaid 15 billion 8.7%
