DONALD S. SHANIS, PH.D.

Director, Transportation Division

Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission

For nearly three decades, Dr. Shanis has helped shape the transportation planning process for the Greater Philadelphia-Camden region, the sixth largest metropolitan area in the country. As the Transportation Director for the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, Don supervises a staff of 60 professional planners and engineers and provides coordination among and technical expertise to governments, operating agencies, and businesses in the region. His recent efforts have focused on developing a Year 2030 Transportation Plan for the Delaware Valley, advancing Intermodal Planning and Intelligent Transportation Systems Planning, and leading studies of key travel corridors.

Dr. Shanis received his planning and engineering education from Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania where he has been an instructor for transportation planning courses. He has presented technical papers to the Transportation Research Board, served on numerous panels, and is frequently a guest speaker on transportation topics.

Dr. Shanis served as Board Chairman of the Friends of Independence National Historical Park from the year 2000 to 2003, and serves on the Boards of the Transportation Management Association of Chester County, the Greater Valley Forge Transportation Management Association, the Partnership Transportation Management Association and the Center City Transportation Management Association.

Don lives in Upper Dublin Township, Pennsylvania with his wife Bonnie Shanis, MD. He has two daughters, Jenna and Dana.
