Anchorage Resident Named to Census Bureau Advisory Committee
Gloria O'Neill, of Anchorage, Alaska, president and chief executive
officer of Cook Inlet Tribal Council, Inc., has been named to the U.S.
Census Bureau's Advisory Committee on the American Indian and Alaska
Native Population.
"I look forward to serving on this important committee and advising the
Census Bureau on a variety of technical, operational and cultural issues
concerning the Alaska Native population," O'Neill said in a statement.
As a member of the nine-person committee, O'Neill will advise the Census
Bureau on ways to achieve an accurate and complete count of the Alaska
Native population in the 2010 census and on the design of the American
Community Survey, which is currently being tested in some areas of the
country. The ACS is scheduled to go nationwide in 2003.
O'Neill is active in civic and community activities in Anchorage,
statewide and nationally. She currently is a board member of the Alaska
Federation of Natives, the Cook Inlet Housing Authority, the Ronald
McDonald House Charities of Western Washington and the University of
Alaska (Anchorage) Advisory Board. O' Neill holds a master's degree from
Alaska Pacific University.
Five race and ethnic advisory committees advise the Census Bureau on
issues affecting American Indians and Alaska Natives, African Americans,
Asians, Hispanics, and Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders. The
committees consist of members from the public at large, as well as
representatives of national, state, local and tribal entities, and
nonprofit and private-sector organizations.
