Population and Housing Profile:  Arlington city, Tarrant County pt., Texas

In addition, caution should be used when comparing population numbers by age, race, and sex for 2000 with all earlier years. The numbers for 2000 have been weighted to be generally consistent with Census 2000 counts.

POPULATION OF Arlington city, Tarrant County pt.: In 2001, Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. had a household population of 348,000 - 178,000 (51 percent) females and 170,000 (49 percent) males. The median age was 30.2 years. Thirty percent of the population were under 18 years and 6 percent were 65 years and older.

For people reporting one race, 71 percent were White alone; 17 percent were Black or African American; less than 0.5 percent were American Indian and Alaska Native; 6 percent were Asian; less than 0.5 percent were Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and 5 percent were Some other race. Two percent reported Two or more races. Twenty-two percent of the people in Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. were Hispanic. Fifty-two percent of the people in Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. were White non-Hispanic. People of Hispanic origin may be of any race.

HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES: In 2001 there were 127,000 households in Arlington city, Tarrant County pt.. The average household size was 2.73 people.

Families made up 65 percent of the households in Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. that year. This figure includes both married-couple families (46 percent) and other families (18 percent). Nonfamily households made up 35 percent of all households in Arlington city, Tarrant County pt.. Most of the nonfamily households were people living alone, but some were comprised of people living in households in which no one was related to the householder.

NATIVITY AND LANGUAGE: Twenty percent of the people living in Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. in 2001 were foreign born. Eighty percent were native, including 58 percent who were born in Texas.

Among people at least five years old living in Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. in 2001, 28 percent spoke a language other than English at home. Of those speaking a language other than English at home, 64 percent spoke Spanish and 36 percent spoke some other language; 33 percent reported that they did not speak English "very well."

GEOGRAPHIC MOBILITY: In 2001, 76 percent of the people at least one year old living in Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. were living in the same residence one year earlier; 18 percent had moved during the past year from another residence in the same county, 5 percent from another county in the same state, 1 percent from another state, and 1 percent from abroad.

EDUCATION: In 2001, 85 percent of people 25 years and over had at least graduated from high school and 31 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher. Among people 16 to 19 years old, 15 percent were dropouts; they were not enrolled in school and had not graduated from high school.

The total school enrollment in Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. was 104,000 in 2001. Preprimary school enrollment was 14,000 and elementary or high school enrollment was 61,000 children. College enrollment was 30,000.

DISABILITY: In Arlington city, Tarrant County pt., among people at least five years old in 2001, 11 percent reported a disability. The likelihood of having a disability varied by age - from 6 percent of people 5 to 20 years old, to 8 percent of people 21 to 64 years old, and to 51 percent of those 65 and older.

INDUSTRIES: In 2001, for the employed population 16 years and older, the leading industries in Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. were Educational, health, and social services, 19 percent, and Manufacturing, 13 percent.

OCCUPATIONS AND TYPE OF EMPLOYER: Among the most common occupations were: Sales and office occupations, 34 percent; Management, professional, and related occupations, 33 percent; Service occupations, 12 percent; Production, transportation, and material moving occupations, 12 percent; and Construction, extraction, and maintenance occupations, 9 percent. Eighty-two percent of the people employed were Private wage and salary workers; 13 percent were Federal, state, or local government workers; and 5 percent were Self-employed.

TRAVEL TO WORK: Eighty percent of Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. workers drove to work alone in 2001, 15 percent carpooled, less than 0.5 percent took public transportation, and 2 percent used other means. The remaining 2 percent worked at home. Among those who commuted to work, it took them on average 26 minutes to get to work.

INCOME: The median income of households in Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. was $46,695. Ninety-two percent of the households received earnings and 7 percent received retirement income other than Social Security. Fourteen percent of the households received Social Security. The average income from Social Security was $12,698. These income sources are not mutually exclusive; that is, some households received income from more than one source.

POVERTY AND PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS: In 2001, 9 percent of people were in poverty. Eleven percent of related children under 18 were below the poverty level, compared with 4 percent of people 65 years old and over. Six percent of all families and 15 percent of families with a female householder and no husband present had incomes below the poverty level. Fifteen percent of the households in Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. received means-tested public assistance or noncash benefits. 

HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS: In 2001, Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. had a total of 135,000 housing units, 5.9 percent of which were vacant. Of the total housing units, 54 percent were in single-unit structures, 45 percent were in multi-unit structures, and 1 percent were mobile homes. Twenty-nine percent of the housing units were built since 1990.

OCCUPIED HOUSING UNIT CHARACTERISTICS: In 2001, Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. had 127,000 occupied housing units - 65,000 (51 percent) owner occupied and 62,000 (49 percent) renter occupied. Five percent of the households did not have telephone service and 5 percent of the households did not have access to a car, truck, or van for private use. Multi-vehicle households were not rare. Thirty-nine percent had two vehicles and another 16 percent had three or more.

HOUSING COSTS: The median monthly housing costs for (specified) mortgaged owners was $1,192, (specified) nonmortgaged owners $442, and (specified) renters $686. Twenty-four percent of owners with mortgages, 12 percent of owners without mortgages, and 43 percent of renters in Arlington city, Tarrant County pt. spent 30 percent or more of household income on housing.
