Population and Housing Profile:  Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt., Colorado

For the 2000 data, respondents may report one or more races and there are seven (American Indian and Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, White, Some other race, and Two or more races) instead of five racial tabulation categories. In addition, caution should be used when comparing population numbers by age, race, and sex for 2000 with all earlier years. The numbers for 2000 have been weighted to be generally consistent with Census 2000 counts.

POPULATION OF Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt.: In 2002, Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. had a household population of 384,000 - 198,000 (51 percent) females and 186,000 (49 percent) males. The median age was 33.1 years. Twenty-eight percent of the population were under 18 years and 8 percent were 65 years and older.

For people reporting one race, 86 percent were White alone; 7 percent were Black or African American; 1 percent were American Indian and Alaska Native; 2 percent were Asian; less than 0.5 percent were Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and 4 percent were Some other race. Four percent reported Two or more races. Thirteen percent of the people in Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. were Hispanic. Seventy-four percent of the people in Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. were White non-Hispanic. People of Hispanic origin may be of any race.

HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES: In 2002 there were 154,000 households in Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt.. The average household size was 2.5 people.

Families made up 66 percent of the households in Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. that year. This figure includes both married-couple families (50 percent) and other families (15 percent). Nonfamily households made up 34 percent of all households in Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt.. Most of the nonfamily households were people living alone, but some were comprised of people living in households in which no one was related to the householder.

NATIVITY AND LANGUAGE: Nine percent of the people living in Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. in 2002 were foreign born. Ninety-one percent were native, including 35 percent who were born in Colorado.

Among people at least five years old living in Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. in 2002, 13 percent spoke a language other than English at home. Of those speaking a language other than English at home, 63 percent spoke Spanish and 37 percent spoke some other language; 44 percent reported that they did not speak English "very well."

GEOGRAPHIC MOBILITY: In 2002, 75 percent of the people at least one year old living in Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. were living in the same residence one year earlier; 15 percent had moved during the past year from another residence in the same county, 2 percent from another county in the same state, 7 percent from another state, and 1 percent from abroad.

EDUCATION: In 2002, 89 percent of people 25 years and over had at least graduated from high school and 37 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher. Among people 16 to 19 years old, 9 percent were dropouts; they were not enrolled in school and had not graduated from high school.

The total school enrollment in Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. was 109,000 in 2002. Preprimary school enrollment was 18,000 and elementary or high school enrollment was 65,000 children. College enrollment was 26,000.

DISABILITY: In Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt., among people at least five years old in 2002, 15 percent reported a disability. The likelihood of having a disability varied by age - from 9 percent of people 5 to 20 years old, to 14 percent of people 21 to 64 years old, and to 38 percent of those 65 and older.

INDUSTRIES: In 2002, for the employed population 16 years and older, the leading industries in Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. were Educational, health, and social services, 18 percent, and Retail trade, 13 percent.

OCCUPATIONS AND TYPE OF EMPLOYER: Among the most common occupations were: Management, professional, and related occupations, 39 percent; Sales and office occupations, 28 percent; Service occupations, 16 percent; Production, transportation, and material moving occupations, 9 percent; and Construction, extraction, and maintenance occupations, 8 percent. Eighty-one percent of the people employed were Private wage and salary workers; 12 percent were Federal, state, or local government workers; and 7 percent were Self-employed.

TRAVEL TO WORK: Seventy-nine percent of Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. workers drove to work alone in 2002, 12 percent carpooled, 1 percent took public transportation, and 4 percent used other means. The remaining 5 percent worked at home. Among those who commuted to work, it took them on average 20 minutes to get to work.

INCOME: The median income of households in Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. was $46,693. Eighty-five percent of the households received earnings and 18 percent received retirement income other than Social Security. Nineteen percent of the households received Social Security. The average income from Social Security was $11,362. These income sources are not mutually exclusive; that is, some households received income from more than one source.

POVERTY AND PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS: In 2002, 8 percent of people were in poverty. Eleven percent of related children under 18 were below the poverty level, compared with 10 percent of people 65 years old and over. Six percent of all families and 23 percent of families with a female householder and no husband present had incomes below the poverty level. Twelve percent of the households in Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. received means-tested public assistance or noncash benefits. 

HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS: In 2002, Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. had a total of 163,000 housing units, 5.6 percent of which were vacant. Of the total housing units, 66 percent were in single-unit structures, 31 percent were in multi-unit structures, and 3 percent were mobile homes. Twenty-four percent of the housing units were built since 1990.

OCCUPIED HOUSING UNIT CHARACTERISTICS: In 2002, Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. had 154,000 occupied housing units - 95,000 (62 percent) owner occupied and 59,000 (38 percent) renter occupied. Four percent of the households did not have telephone service and 6 percent of the households did not have access to a car, truck, or van for private use. Multi-vehicle households were not rare. Thirty-nine percent had two vehicles and another 20 percent had three or more.

HOUSING COSTS: The median monthly housing costs for (specified) mortgaged owners was $1,262, (specified) nonmortgaged owners $243, and (specified) renters $681. Twenty-eight percent of owners with mortgages, 5 percent of owners without mortgages, and 45 percent of renters in Colorado Springs city, El Paso County pt. spent 30 percent or more of household income on housing.
