The question on Marital History was added to the ACS questionnaire in 2008.

Who is asked?

Questions on marital status and marital history are asked of all persons ages 15 and older.

Respondents are asked questions 20, 21, and 22 if they indicated that their marital status was:

Why are these questions asked?

These questions were placed on the American Community Survey at the request of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to provide data users and analysts with the ability to track in greater detail annual changes in marital events that formerly were collected and published by the National Center for Health Statistics. Information gathered from this survey will help DHHS evaluate its programs funded under the Healthy Marriage Initiative.
