BUILDING PERMITS DATA ORDERING INFORMATION PACKAGE Residential and Nonresidential Historic Printouts and Diskettes Privately Owned Construction Authorized by Building Permits: Prepared by the Residential Construction Branch, Manufacturing and Construction Division, Bureau of the Census, Washington D.C. 20233-6900 SUBJECT-MATTER DESCRIPTION: Annual statistics up to 1994 and monthly statistics to December 1995 contain data on privately owned construction authorized by building permits for the following series: residential and non-residential construction for new buildings; additions, alterations and conversions; and demolitions. GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE: Data are collected at the individual permit offices in the United States. This data is then aggregated to the State and Metropolitan Area (MA) levels. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION: Data are available on both computer printouts and floppy diskettes. Diskette files are ASCII comma delimited files with as many as 600 characters per record and are designed to be read by a database or spreadsheet that can handle long record lengths. A general utility program is provided to view the file or select subsets of the data for input to spreadsheet programs. SECTION A STATE AND METROPOLITAN AREA BUILDING PERMITS DATA (Printouts and Diskettes) Data tabulated by State and Metropolitan Area (MA) are available on computer printouts and diskettes. Data shown are number of buildings, permit valuation and, for residential, number of housing units. Residential data are shown by type of structure (i.e., 1, 2, 3-4 or 5 units or more); nonresidential data (when available) are shown by type of construction (eg., industrial, office buildings, etc.). 1. Data by State The computer printouts show aggregated totals for each state, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Totals (excluding Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands) are also shown for divisions, regions, inside and outside metropolitan areas (MAs), and the United States. Diskettes do not show Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands or aggregate totals for inside and outside metropolitan areas (MAs). 2. Data by Metropolitan Areas The computer printouts and diskettes show aggregated totals for metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), consolidated metropolitan statistical areas (CMSAs), and the CMSA's component primary metropolitan statistical areas (PMSAs). Computer printouts of annual data are available from 1979 through 1994. Computer printouts for monthly data are not available for nonresidential data. Use Order Form 1 to order computer printouts. Diskettes of annual data are available from 1980 through 1994. Monthly data on diskettes are available from January 1988 through December 1995. Use Order Form 2 to order diskettes. SECTION B BUILDING PERMITS DATA FOR INDIVIDUAL PERMIT-ISSUING PLACES (Printouts and Diskettes) Data for individual permit-issuing places are available on computer printouts and diskettes. Data shown are number of buildings, permit valuation and, for residential, number of housing units. Residential data are shown by type of structure (i.e., 1, 2, 3-4 or 5 units or more); nonresidential data (when available) are shown by type of construction (eg., industrial, office buildings, etc.). Computer printouts are available for entire states. Data are shown for the permit-issuing places within the state, sorted by county and place. Monthly data are shown only for those places that are requested to report monthly. Therefore, the county and state totals may or may not reflect the total monthly activity within the area. Annual data are shown for all permit-issuing-places in the state. Computer printouts of annual data are available from 1987 through 1994. Monthly data are not available for nonresidential data. Use Order Form 1 for computer printouts. Diskettes are available for entire regions. Data are included for the permit issuing places within the region, sorted by state and place. County and state totals are not included on the diskette. Monthly data are shown for the places that are requested to report monthly.
