Industry 1794

Establishments classified in this industry are primarily engaged in excavation work such as foundations for buildings and subdividing and preparing land owned by others for future building construction. Contractors in this industry may also perform incidental concrete work. Contractors primarily engaged in concrete work are classified in Industry 1771, Concrete Work Special Trade Contractors. Contractors primarily engaged in trenching or in earth moving and land clearing not related to building construction are classified in Industry 1629, Heavy Construction Contractors, Not Elsewhere Classified. During 1992, the establishments with paid employees classified in this industry accounted for $7.1 billion in total dollar value of business. Of this amount, $6.9 billion were for the value of construction work. These establishments paid out $1.6 billion for materials, components, and supplies and $741 million for construction work subcontracted to others. Costs for selected power, fuels, and lubricants for the industry were $357 million. Value added for 1992 was $4.3 billion.

There were 13,898 establishments with total employment averaging 77,126 during the year. Total payroll for 1992 was $1.8 billion.

Larger establishments with 20 employees or more, while representing only 5 percent of the total number of employer establishments in this industry, accounted for 44 percent of all business done.
