Six digit SIC data provides detail unavailable at the 4 digit level for industry "subgroups" such as plumbing contractors, roofing contractors, and fencing contractors. For each of the subgroups, the following items are provided: number of establishments, employees - all, employees - construction workers, payroll - all employees, payroll - construction workers, value of construction work done, net value of construction work done, value added, cost of work subcontracted out, cost of materials, components, supplies and fuels.

Establishments in the 1992 Census of Construction Industries were classified into SIC subgroups by their primary construction activity. These codes were developed for Census Bureau processing and analytical operations. Since the Standard Industrial Classification Manual only provides coding standards to the 4 digit level, these codes will vary from other sources. Also, these previously unpublished data did not undergo as thorough an analytical review for accuracy, completeness and consistency as was done for data shown in the 4 digit industry, geographic and special report series.
