Seasonally adjusted estimates of housing units authorized by building permits, started, under construction, and completed are revised in the April New Residential Construction press release (released in May).
Length of Time tables for New Residential Construction estimates are released in the February survey month.
Analysis of Revisons for New Residential Construction estimates are released in the January and July survey months.
Annual Characteristics for houses started and completed for the previous year are usually released on the first workday (excluding weekends and holidays) of June the following year.
Annual Building Permits data are usually released on the 1st workday of May for the previous year. The data available at the time of the annual release are at the U.S., Region, State, Metropolitan Area, County, and Permit-issuing Place levels. Data are available for all Counties and Permit-issuing Places. Revised monthly estimates for the U.S. and Census Regions for the prior year which have been "benchmarked" to the final annual totals are also released.
11/17/22 - Notice of methodology change: Beginning with the January New Residential Construction release on February 16, 2023, the Building Permits survey will change its target universe from the current 2014 basis to an annually updated universe. This change will allow for more accurate and quicker coverage when jurisdictions change from not issuing building permits to issuing them.
