CENSUS LETTERS: RIGHT ADDRESS,
WRONG NUMBERS
Over the
next week, the Postal Service will be delivering letters to just about
every household in America announcing next month's arrival of Census
questionnaires. These "Pre-Notification" letters will be delivered to
some households on March 1 and to others on March 6.
Because of a production error by a Census Bureau
vendor, the address on the Census letter you receive will appear to be
incorrect - usually by the addition of a single digit (1, 2, 3, 4, or 5)
to the beginning of your street address. For example, if you live at 123
Main Street, the address on your Census letter might read 1123 Main
Street. But it will be your mail.
Despite the glitch, the Postal Service's high-speed,
automated sorting technology can read the proper address from other
elements, such as the barcode, in the letter's address block. So, when
you receive your letter, please remember that our employees are working
to see that the right letter gets delivered to the right house.
We know that America is counting on the Postal Service
to make sure that every American is counted. And we'll deliver!
