Summary

The next census of the United State's population and housing will be conducted as of April 1, 2000. Reflecting a long tradition, Census 2000 will be the 22nd decennial enumeration in an unbroken chain that our nation has undertaken. From apportioning the U.S. House of Representives to providing the data used by communities, businesses, and Americans everywhere, the decennial census is the cornerstone of our knowledge about our nation. The census is the only data-gathering operation in the United States that is mandated by the Constitution and the only one that produces a broad array of information at the smallest geographic levels.
