E-Commerce

E-Commerce is defined by the Census Bureau as transactions sold on-line whether over open networks such as the Internet or proprietary networks running systems such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)

Currently, in the Economic Census, e-commerce data is avaialble for industries that have e-commerce as a primary business function (e.g Industry 45411121 Electronic shopping, computer hardware and software).

To improve access to e-commerce statistics, the Census Bureau releases the E-Stats report on a yearly basis. E-Stats covers the manufacturing; merchant wholesale trade; retail trade sectors; and selected service industries. The data is limited to E commerce sales totals. It compiles data from the following surveys:

More detailed e-commerce data at the firm level can be found in the Survey of Business Owners and at the establishment level in the Economic Census of Island Areas.
