The preliminary estimates in this report are based on responses from owners of businesses with paid employees operating in the United States. Data were collected on the 2002 Survey of Business Owners. Businesses were asked to report information about the characteristics of up to 3 individuals with the largest share of ownership. If a business had more than 3 owners, no characteristics information was requested from the additional owners. The data represent the characteristics of approximately 7.7 million owners.

The estimates in this report are subject to sampling variability as well as nonsampling errors. Sources of nonsampling error include errors of response, nonreporting and coverage. For information on sampling error and nonsampling error, see the "Reliability of Estimates" section of the introductory text.

The characteristics data presented in this report will be superseded by data released in later reports. The reports will include owners of businesses with paid employers and businesses without paid employees to yield an "All Owners" total, and the data will also be presented by state.

Additional tables:
