Survey of Business Owners - Main

Results from the 2012 Survey of Business Owners (SBO) are available.

Approximately 1.75 million businesses were selected for the 2012 SBO asking for information about characteristics of the businesses and their owners.

These data supercede the preliminary estimates that were published in August 2015.

SBO data are presented by:

  • Gender, ethnicity, race, and veteran status
  • Geography (U.S., states, metropolitan areas, counties, and places)
  • Industry (2- through 6-digit NAICS for selected geographies)
  • Firm receipts size
  • Firm employment size

The Characteristics of Businesses and the Characteristics of Business Owners data will be released in March 2016 and will include estimates at the U.S. geography level and 2-digit NAICS industry detail.

Results from the 2007 Survey of Business Owners (SBO) are available.

Approximately 2.3 million businesses received the 2007 SBO-1 questionnaire asking for information about characteristics of the businesses and their owners.

SBO data are presented by:

  • Gender, ethnicity, race, and veteran status
  • Geography (U.S., states, metropolitan areas, counties, and places)
  • Industry (2- through 6-digit NAICS for selected geographies)
  • Firm receipts size
  • Firm employment size
