Employment Change Data
Data include the number of establishments and corresponding employment
change for births, deaths, expansions, and contractions by employment
size of enterprise, industry, and state. The industry and state are determined
by the initial year data for establishment deaths and continuing establishments
and by the subsequent year data for establishment births.
For establishment deaths and continuing establishments, the enterprise
size is determined by the employment of the controlling enterprise in
the initial year. The enterprise size is determined by the employment
of the controlling enterprise in the subsequent year for single-unit establishment
births. For multiunit establishment births, the enterprise size is determined
by the employment of the controlling enterprise in the initial year if
the enterprise exists in the initial year and by the employment of the
controlling enterprise in the subsequent year if the enterprise does not
exist in the initial year. For the purposes of the dynamic tabulations,
an establishment is considered in existence in a given year if it has
first quarter employment for that year. An enterprise is considered in
existence in a given year if it owns at least one establishment with first
quarter employment for that year.
Starting with the 2007-2008 tabulations, the industry classification is based on the 2007 North American Industry Classification System
(NAICS) codes.
Prior year data are based on 2002 NAICS (2003-2004 through 2006-2007), 1997 NAICS (1998-1999 through 2002-2003), and the
Standard Industrial Classification
(SIC) codes
(1989-1990 through 1997-1998).
