On behalf of the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the Census Bureau is evaluating the feasibility of conducting a Computer Security Survey (CSS). This survey is designed to measure the nature and extent of computer-related crime experienced by businesses.
The project consists of two distinct phases: evaluation and collection. The evaluation phase is being used to develop survey questions; perform cognitive testing of the questions; and field-test the survey instrument. The evaluation phase is scheduled to be completed by January 2003.
Because the evaluation is a feasibility study, economy-wide estimates will not be derived from the data. The collection phase of the project will depend on the results of the evaluation from both a collection and publication standpoint. If the results of the evaluation indicate that the data are reportable and meet Census Bureau standards for collection and publication, actual collection could begin in the Fall of 2003 for the 2002 reporting year. In normal future processing, previous year data would be collected early each year.
