=>UNIVERSE DESCRIPTION

The universe of the first and third files is all retail trade establishments
with or without payroll.  The universe of the second file is confined to
retail establishments without payroll.


=>SUBJECT-MATTER DESCRIPTION

The information included on the Nonemployer Statistics Series files of
this CD-ROM is the same as that shown in the printed Nonemployer Statistics
Series, RC92-N-1, except that number of establishments and sales figures
appear by kind of business for counties and places on CD-ROM but not in the
corresponding printed tables.

This series of three files provides 1992 data by SIC code.  Data items
include:  Number of establishments, Sales, Sales size of establishments, Legal
form of organization


=>GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE

Data are provided for the following geographic levels:

File 1:  U.S., States, Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA), Consolidated
         Metropolitan Statistical Areas (CMSA), Primary Metropolitan
         Statistical Areas (PMSA), Area Outside Metropolitan Areas by State
         (non-MA), Counties, Places with populations of 2,500 or more

File 2:  U.S.

File 3:  U.S.


=>SIC/KIND-OF-BUSINESS DETAIL

The 1992 Census of Retail Trade covers retail trade as defined in the 1987
Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Manual.  This includes establishments
classified in Major Groups 52-59.  The census includes liquor stores operated
by State and local governments; however, all other government-operated
businesses are excluded.  

The Nonemployer Statistics Series presents data for selected SIC or
kind-of-business (KB) codes.  The level of KB detail varies by file and
geography.  The KB codes included in each "stub" may be compared in
SICKEY92.dbf.

EXTRACT   This software system, included on this CD-ROM, provides access to
every file discussed in the Technical Description section of this abstract.

GO92   This software system, also included on this CD-ROM, provides a more
"user-friendly" access to selected statistics from the economic census. 
These statistics include the number of establishments and sales for
RC92N1.dbf.  Files RC92N2.dbf and RC92N3.dbf are not accessable in GO92.
GO92 allows the user to select any geographic area and show data by kind
of business, or to select any kind of business and show data for all
geographic areas of a particular type, for example, counties within a
specified State.

RC92A3.dbf) provides the number of establishments, sales, payroll, and
employment for establishments with payroll by kind of business

This data is included in Volume 1 of the CD-ROM series.
