=>UNIVERSE DESCRIPTION

The universe is all retail trade establishments with payroll. 
Establishments with no paid employees, for example, "mom and pop"
stores, are not included in the ZIP Code files, but are included
in the Nonemployer Statistics Series.  However, nonemployer data
is not available at the ZIP Code level.


=>SUBJECT-MATTER DESCRIPTION

The information included on the ZIP Code files is only available
on CD-ROM.  There is no corresponding publication.

This series of two files provides 1992 data by ZIP Code and SIC code.
File 1 (RC92Z1.dbf) gives counts of retail establishments with
payroll, classified by sales size ranges and employment size ranges,
for each detailed kind of business at the United States, State, and
ZIP Code levels.  File 2 (RC92Z2.dbf) presents statistics for number
of establishments, sales, payroll, and employment for the Retail Trade
total (SICKEY 0001) at the United States, State, and ZIP Code levels.


=>GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE

Data are provided for the United States, States, and ZIP Codes.


=>SIC/KIND-OF-BUSINESS DETAIL

The 1992 Census of Retail Trade covers retail trade as defined in
the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Manual.  This
includes establishments classified in Major Groups 52-59.  The
Census includes Liquor stores operated by State and local
governments; however, all other government-operated businesses are
excluded.  

The ZIP Code Statistics Series presents data for selected SIC or kind-
of-business (KB) codes.  The level of KB detail varies by file.  File 1
(RC92Z1.dbf) contains data for the United States, States, and ZIP Codes
for 134 kinds of business (the 'A' stub).  File 2 (RC92Z2.dbf) provides
data for the United States, States, and ZIP Codes for the Retail Trade
total (SICKEY 0001).  The KB codes included in the 'A' stub may be
referenced in SICKEY92.dbf.


=>SOFTWARE ACCESS

EXTRACT   This software system, included on this CD-ROM, provides
access to every file discussed in the Technical Description
section of this abstract.

GO92   This software system, also included on this CD-ROM, provides
a more "user-friendly" access to selected statistics from the
economic censuses.  These statistics include number of establishments,
number of establishments by sales size class and employment size class,
sales, payroll, and employment.  GO92 allows the user to display U.S.,
State, or ZIP Code records with data by kind of business, sales size
class, and employment size class, or to display establishment data for
all ZIP Codes in a state.


=>RELEASE SCHEDULE

Release 2A of the ZIP Code Statistics Series will include data for
Retail Trade and Service Industries.  ZIP Code data for the
Agriculture Census and the Manufactures Census will be on release 2B.

Census of Retail Trade, 1992:  Geographic Area Series (RC92A1.dbf,
RC92A2.dbf, RC92A3.dbf) provides the number of establishments, sales,
payroll, and employment for establishments with payroll by kind of
business for the United States, States, metropolitan areas, counties,
and places.  This data is included in Volume 1 of the CD-ROM series.
