The universe is transportation, communications, and utilities establishments
with payroll.  Establishments with no paid employees are not included in the
Geographic Area Series files, but are included in the Nonemployer Statistics
Series files.

The information included on the Geographic Area Series files of this CD-ROM is
the same as that shown in the printed Geographic Area Report, UC92-A-1.

This set of two files provides 1992 and selected 1987 data by SIC category.

=>SIC/KIND-OF-BUSINESS DETAIL

The 1992 Census of Transportation, Communications, and Utilities covers
transportation, communications, electric, gas, and sanitary services as
defined in the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Manual.  This
includes establishments classified in Major Groups 40-49.  The Census excludes
government-operated businesses.

The Geographic Area Series uses 133 SIC or kind-of-business (KB)
classifications.  The level of kind-of-business detail varies by KB by total
number of establishments by geography.

=>SOFTWARE ACCESS

EXTRACT     This software system, included on this CD-ROM, provides access to
            every data item discussed in the Technical Description section of
            this abstract.

GO92        This software system, also included on this CD-ROM, provides a
            more "user-friendly" access to selected statistics from the
            economic censuses.  These include the number of establishments,
            number of employees, and revenue.  GO92 allows the user to select
            any geographic area and shows data by kind of business, or to
            select any kind of business and show data for all geographic areas
            of a particular type, for example, all states.

=>RELATED DATA FILES

Census of Transportation, Communications, and Utilities, 1992:  Nonemployer
Statistics Series provides revenues for establishments without payroll by kind
of business for the United States and States.  Also provided is total revenues
for all establishments, that is, revenues of establishments with payroll plus
revenues of establishments without payroll.
