Announcement With this release, the Bureau of the Census is publishing revised U.S. merchandise trade statistics for 1991. As was done in previous years, both import and export data have been adjusted to eliminate "carry-over" (that portion of the monthly statistics that arrives too late for inclusion in the transaction month) and to include errata (corrections to the published monthly data). Once the above adjustments were completed, factors for seasonal and working-day adjustment were recomputed based on the revised 1991 data. Therefore, seasonally adjusted data have been revised for 1990 and 1991 (see Exhibit 1). Revised seasonally adjusted data by principal end-use commodity categories are provided in Exhibit 2. Revised petroleum and non-petroleum end-use commodity totals are shown in Exhibit 4. Constant dollar figures (see Exhibits 9 and 10) have also been revised to reflect the new seasonally adjusted data, as well as revised monthly deflators developed in accordance with the deflators used in the National Income and Product Accounts published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. New In past years, the Bureau of the Census made minor adjustments to the seasonally adjusted data to force the monthly figures to equal the unadjusted annual totals. With this release, the Bureau is no longer making these adjustments; therefore, the monthly seasonally adjusted data will not sum to the calendar year totals.
