How do I upload a file for a Foreign Trade Division (FTD) employee to retrieve?

You can upload files for FTD employees to retrieve. Follow these steps:

  1. Contact the person to whom you are sending the file so they know to expect it. Unless they are expecting it, FTD employees will not download any files that arrive for them.
  2. If the information in your file is sensistive, make sure you and the person to whom you are sending the file agree on a method of protection (i.e. password, encryption, etc.)
  3. Get the person's e-mail address. If you don't get it from the person, you can obtain it from our list of contacts or from the Census employee directory.
  4. Under the section "Target Information (Remote)"
    • Enter your e-mail address as "Your Password". This way, when we're notified that the file has arrived, we'll also know who sent it.
    • As the "Directory to Receive File", please enter "/pub/incoming/ftd". This is a directory specifically for FTD employees.
    • As the "New File Name", please enter the name you would like the file saved as once it's transmitted to our machine.
  5. Under the section "Source Information (Local)"
    • As the "Name of File to Send", enter the path of the file on your system that you wish to send. You can also click on the BROWSE button to point to it.
  6. Under the section "Census Bureau Employee (to notify by E-Mail)"
    • Please enter the e-mail address of the person to whom you are sending the file (see #3 above). This is important. With no e-mail address, we'll have no way of knowing if the file has arrived. With an e-mail address, the person to whom you're sending the file will be notified once you've finished.
