ABOUT FOREIGN TRADE DIVISION

The Foreign Trade Division (FTD) is under the auspices of the Office of the Associate Director for Economic Programs at the U.S Bureau of the Census. The Economic Programs area collects data about the nation's economy and agriculture. The Foreign Trade Division is the primary source of statistics on foreign trade data. Specifically, the Foreign Trade Division formulates and develops overall plans and programs for the collection, processing, review, linkage with other economic data, and dissemination of statistical data regarding various aspects of the export and import trade of the United States and foreign trade shipping.

PRIVACY AND CONFIDENTIALITY OF FOREIGN TRADE STATISTICS

All data collected is covered by the Privacy Act and Title 13 of the U.S. Code. Title 13, U.S. Code provides laws pertaining to the Census Bureau's statistical programs and confidentially of data.

Title 13 of the U.S. code mandates that all individual responses be held confidential and establishes penalties for unauthorized disclosure of confidential information. The Census Bureau strives to ensure confidentiality while providing valuable information. Edits are performed on all data products to make sure confidential information is not released for any individual, household or business establishment. Confidentiality means that only sworn employees of the Census Bureau may have access to individual census information.

ELECTRONIC DISSEMINATION OF U.S. INTERNATIONAL FOREIGN TRADE STATISTICS

In an era of new technologies and increasing demand for foreign trade information through electronic dissemination mechanisms, the Internet provides a medium by which to promote the U.S. International Trade Statistics products and services. Through the use of the Internet computer network, we are able to expand our potential customer base and improve service to current data users of foreign trade statistics.
